Q&A
1. Let’s start with your journey. How did you begin, and what led you to your current leadership role?
I began my career in Industrial and Systems Engineering after graduating from Georgia Tech. My early years at General Motors and the GM and Toyota joint venture, NUMMI, gave me a deep education in operational excellence. From there, I led major operations at Ford and later ran a global P&L for 3M. I also authored a book on lean business practices, *Make your Business a Lean Business*, which reflected my passion for efficiency and problem-solving. Eventually, I stepped into the start-up world, serving as CEO of a biotech company and later co-founding Brown Venture Group. Today, my work at Warecorp and across our portfolio companies allows me to combine everything I have learned over the years.
2. Along the way, what motivated you to keep pushing forward, and which values guide your leadership today?
Integrity has always been my foundation. I believe it is the one thing a person must never lose. I also believe in lifting as I climb. Success means more when you use it to help others move forward. This is why I am involved with the Federal Mashup Lab, where we help businesses grow through technology commercialization. We piloted the program with NASA, teaching operational excellence and real-world business fundamentals. For me, the motivation comes from seeing others win and knowing that I contributed to their growth.
3. Every path has challenges. Can you share a defining moment in your career and how you overcame it?
A major turning point came when I wanted to shift from operational leadership to running a global P&L. It was difficult because I had spent most of my career on the back end of the business. To pivot, I relied on prayer, hard work, networking, training, and persistence. Attending the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program helped broaden my perspective. The experience taught me to never let fear of failure limit my growth.
4. Innovation and collaboration are essential today. How do you cultivate these within your team or the organizations you support?
At Brown Venture Group, we invest only in technology companies, which gives me constant exposure to some of the brightest minds. I also mentor founders and make myself available to help them strategize and grow. Collaboration is often the difference between success and stagnation. I sit on the boards of promising start-ups and stay closely involved with tools like Synaptic Flow, an AI-enabled strategic and operations planning platform. At Warecorp, a strong focus on high-quality software development fuels innovation. Our investment in companies like Flexforge, which works in battery energy storage and EV charging, shows how powerful collaborative innovation can be.
5. From your perspective, what traits distinguish top-performing leaders from the rest?
Top leaders are continuous learners. They read widely and stay curious. I also believe in being a jack of many trades but a master of one, so that when a specific topic comes up, people trust your expertise. Great leaders are gracious, resilient, and have a strong sense of integrity. They communicate clearly and inspire others to rally around a mission. Most importantly, they have strong social intelligence and business acumen.
6. Mentorship can be transformative. How has it shaped your growth, and how do you encourage it in your team?
Mentorship has played a major role in my growth. I always teach the difference between mentorship and sponsorship. A mentor offers guidance, but a sponsor takes it a step further by opening doors and making calls on your behalf. I have served in both roles. Still, neither can replace hard work. A mentor or sponsor needs something solid to advocate for.
7. The market is always shifting. How do you keep your organization aligned and agile?
I believe in surrounding myself with the best talent. At Brown Venture Group, we have sharp analysts and a strong director who help us track trends and technologies. We also rely on tools like CRM systems, strategic planning platforms, and other technologies that support precision execution. Staying agile means staying informed and embracing tools that make us better.
8. Looking back, is there a lesson that significantly shaped your leadership style?
Yes, I once saw a CEO hire a highly skilled technical person who lacked emotional intelligence. The individual was talented but brought negative energy and poor team chemistry. Eventually, the leader let him go. At first, I did not fully understand, but over time, I learned that a negative presence can hold back an entire organization. Talent alone is not enough. Culture and collaboration matter even more.
9. What advice would you give emerging leaders who want to make an impact?
Keep learning, especially in areas like AI, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data migration, clean energy, and leadership. Build strong relationships and network with intention. Relationships work best when you ask yourself how you can help others. Growth happens when you focus not only on your path, but also on how you contribute to the paths of others.
10. Finally, what excites you most about the future for your organization and your industry?
We are investing in game-changing technologies that can reshape entire industries. Watching founders grow their companies is extremely rewarding. One founder recently thanked us for walking the talk, and his company is now approaching forty million dollars in sales. Moments like these fuel my excitement for the future. There is so much potential ahead.
