Let’s start with your journey. How did your path lead you to becoming the leader you are today?

I began as a first-generation college student, which meant navigating a lot of decisions on my own. While many of my classmates toured campuses with their parents, I relied on websites, brochures, and financial aid offers. I started at Benedict College, where I did well academically, but my heart was always set on Howard University. After transferring, I faced the challenge of having no financial support. That weekend, I prayed relentlessly, and by Monday, I received a full four-year scholarship. That experience deepened my faith and taught me the power of perseverance.

After graduating from Howard with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Hospitality Management, I began my career in human resources as a Generalist and Trainer. Over the next 13 years, I advanced through leadership roles—from Corporate HR Manager to Regional and Area HR Director. I eventually helped convert a Crowne Plaza into a DoubleTree by Hilton, an incredible experience that highlighted how culture and people drive transformation. My journey later led me to head HR at a major oncology practice, where my team supported the largest physician extraction from a medical center into a private practice. That’s where the idea for The Shine Institute was born—I realized I couldn’t keep these strategies to myself.

What inspired you to start The Shine Institute?

During my work in HR, I saw countless talented individuals struggle with confidence, clarity, or access to the right guidance. I wanted to create a platform that helped people and organizations operate with purpose and excellence. The Shine Institute was built to empower others to grow—professionally, personally, and spiritually—through practical leadership development and people-centered strategies. It’s about helping others see the brilliance that already exists within them.

Along the way, what values have guided your leadership?

My leadership philosophy is built around the word SHINE, which stands for Servant Leadership, Humility, Integrity, Inclusion, Niceness, Empathy, and Excellence. I believe in leading by example, showing my team how to serve, not just instructing them. Humility keeps me grounded and grateful, while integrity ensures I do the right thing—even when no one is watching. Inclusion drives collaboration, and kindness shapes every interaction. Empathy allows me to truly connect, and excellence is the standard I set for myself and those around me.

What motivated you to keep pushing forward during the toughest moments?

There was a time early in college when I didn’t know where I would live. That uncertainty created a “laser focus” in me. Success became the only option. I also found motivation in people who underestimated me. Being judged for my youth or appearance only pushed me to exceed expectations. Every challenge reinforced my belief that hard work, faith, and character always speak louder than assumptions.

Can you share one defining moment in your career that shaped your perspective on leadership?

One major turning point came when a Vice President who had once supported me began to undermine my progress. After being promoted to a challenging role, I realized she was withholding information and setting traps to make me fail. Eventually, I had to make a difficult decision to expose unethical behavior that threatened the company’s integrity. Standing up for what was right came at a personal cost, as I was grateful for her initial support, but it also strengthened my resolve as a leader. It reminded me that leadership is not about power—it’s about courage, accountability, and protecting what’s right.

How do faith and purpose influence your decisions as a leader?

My faith is the foundation of everything I do. From the scholarship that changed my life to the opportunities that shaped my career, I’ve seen how divine timing and purpose work. I lead from a place of trust—believing that every challenge has meaning and every success is meant to serve others. Faith keeps me anchored, even when circumstances are uncertain.

Our approach is holistic. We don’t just focus on professional skills—we nurture mindset, confidence, and emotional intelligence. I believe true leadership begins from within.
