Joe Hubbard: Driving Sustainable Growth in the Protein Industry

In an industry where innovation, sustainability, and reliability matter more than ever, Joe Hubbard has built a company focused on creating meaningful change. As the founder and CEO of Integrated Proteins, Hubbard has transformed his passion for agriculture and animal nutrition into a growing business that supports the evolving needs of the feed and pet food industries.

From his early days studying Agricultural Economics to building international relationships in global trade, Hubbard’s journey has been shaped by curiosity, persistence, and a strong commitment to quality. Since launching Integrated Proteins in 2019, he has focused on developing sustainable protein solutions while building a workplace culture centered on teamwork, trust, and long-term growth. Today, as the company continues to expand, Hubbard remains focused on innovation that benefits both the industry and the lives of pets around the world.

Q1. Let’s begin with your journey. How did your career start, and what led you to where you are today?

My journey really began while I was earning my degree in Agricultural Economics. During that time, I interned with Archer-Daniels-Midland, and that experience introduced me to the food and protein industry in a very real way. I became especially interested in the global side of agriculture and trade.

One of the defining moments early in my career was successfully brokering a protein deal in South America. That experience gave me confidence and showed me the scale of opportunities within the industry. Over time, my passion for sustainable protein solutions continued to grow, and in 2019, I founded Integrated Proteins. Since then, we’ve worked hard to build the company from the ground up and create solutions that support the feed industry in a more sustainable way.

Q2. What has motivated you to keep moving forward throughout your journey?

A big part of my motivation has always been my passion for animal health and nutrition. I truly believe the work we do can improve the quality of life for pets while also supporting the long-term future of the industry.

What also keeps me motivated is the team around me. Building a company is never a one-person effort. I’m grateful for the dedication and hard work of our employees, and seeing what we’ve accomplished together inspires me every day. Watching people grow within the organization and contribute to our shared vision has been incredibly rewarding.

Q3. Every leader faces challenges. Was there a defining challenge that shaped your leadership approach?

Absolutely. As our company grew quickly, one of the biggest challenges became maintaining our culture while scaling the business. Growth is exciting, but it can also create pressure internally if you are not intentional about communication and leadership.

That experience taught me the importance of putting people first. I’ve learned that investing in leadership development, improving communication, and making sure employees feel heard are all critical to building a healthy organization. A strong culture does not happen by accident. It takes continuous effort and attention.

Q4. Innovation plays a major role in disruption. How do you encourage innovation within your organization?

For us, innovation starts with staying connected to market trends and understanding where the industry is heading. We spend a lot of time listening to customers, studying changing demands, and identifying opportunities to improve.

Partnerships are also very important. Collaborating with others brings fresh ideas and different perspectives that can strengthen our business. In addition, we invest heavily in technology that improves efficiency and sustainability.

Most importantly, we make sure our team understands that innovation is not about change for the sake of change. It is about building a stronger and more resilient future for both our company and the industry as a whole.

Q5. In your opinion, what separates great leaders from the rest?

The best leaders are honest, adaptable, and lead with integrity. They are willing to think differently while still staying grounded in strong values.

I also believe great leaders genuinely care about people. They inspire others, communicate clearly, and remain compassionate even during difficult moments. Leadership is not just about making decisions. It is about creating an environment where people feel empowered to do their best work.

Q6. How have mentorship and collaboration influenced your growth as a leader?

Mentorship and collaboration have had a major impact on me. Early in my career, I learned that leadership is built on trust and delegation. You cannot grow a business successfully if you try to control every decision yourself.

Today, we focus heavily on empowering people within our organization. We hold bi-monthly meetings where our leadership team shares ideas, discusses challenges, and supports one another. That level of collaboration helps us continue learning and improving together.

Creating a culture where people feel trusted and valued has made a huge difference in our success.

Q7. Industries and customer expectations are constantly evolving. How do you keep your organization agile?

We stay agile by remaining proactive instead of reactive. Our team spends a lot of time looking ahead at market trends and identifying what customers will need in the future.

We also continue developing patented technologies and processes that allow us to adapt quickly. Innovation and flexibility are essential in this industry, especially as sustainability becomes a larger priority across the market.

Being willing to evolve while staying focused on customer needs has helped us continue growing in a competitive environment.

Q8. Looking back, was there a lesson that significantly changed your leadership style?

One of the biggest lessons for me was learning how to delegate effectively. Earlier in my career, I felt responsible for handling every decision and every task myself. Over time, I realized that approach was not sustainable.

Building a strong and diverse leadership team completely changed my perspective. Once I learned to trust the people around me, I was able to shift toward a more collaborative leadership style. That not only improved the business, but also created a healthier and more positive work environment for our employees.

Q9. What advice would you give to emerging leaders who want to make a real impact?

My advice would be to build a strong leadership team around you and never stop learning from the people you work with. Surround yourself with individuals who challenge you, support you, and grow alongside you.

I would also encourage young leaders not to get discouraged by setbacks or rejection. Every successful business faces obstacles. Staying focused and continuing to move forward is what matters most.

Finally, take the time to truly understand your customers, employees, and community. When those groups are aligned, it creates a much stronger foundation for long-term success.

Q10. What excites you most about the future of Integrated Proteins and the industry overall?

This is an incredibly exciting time for both our company and the pet food industry as a whole. We are experiencing strong growth, and there are many new opportunities emerging across the market.

At Integrated Proteins, we have several exciting products and ventures in development that we believe will help drive meaningful change within the industry. Sustainability, innovation, and animal nutrition are becoming more important than ever, and we are proud to be part of that progress.

I’m very optimistic about where the industry is heading and excited about the role we can play in shaping its future.
