Dr. Santarvis Brown: Leading With Purpose to Build Stronger People and Organizations

Leadership is often measured by titles, achievements, or the size of an organization. For Dr. Santarvis Brown, however, true leadership is measured by the lives transformed along the way. Throughout a career that has spanned K-12 education, higher education, nonprofit leadership, executive administration, governance, ministry, and organizational strategy, he has remained focused on one enduring belief: education has the power to change lives.

Today, as an Educator and Leader at Excelsior University, Dr. Brown continues to shape future leaders through teaching, mentoring, writing, and speaking. His work reflects a thoughtful balance of innovation, integrity, and compassion, with a strong commitment to helping individuals and organizations reach their full potential. Rather than chasing recognition, he has built a career centered on service, continuous learning, and creating environments where people feel empowered to grow. In this conversation, Dr. Brown shares the experiences, values, and lessons that have shaped his leadership journey and his vision for the future.

Q: Let’s start with your journey. Can you tell us how you began and what led you to your current leadership role?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: My leadership journey began with a simple belief that education changes lives. I started my career in K-12 education, and over time, my path expanded into higher education, nonprofit leadership, executive administration, governance, ministry, and organizational strategy. Every role reinforced the idea that leadership is about helping people discover possibilities they may not yet see in themselves. Today, as a Professor of Management and Leadership at Excelsior University, as well as an author, speaker, and executive leader, I remain committed to creating organizations where purpose, innovation, and people grow together.

Q: What has kept you motivated throughout your journey, and what values guide your leadership today?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: Purpose has always been my greatest source of motivation. I have never focused on titles or positions. Instead, I have been driven by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. The values that guide me every day are integrity, service, excellence, humility, and courage. I believe leadership is a form of stewardship. When leaders genuinely invest in developing others, organizations become stronger, workplace cultures improve, and communities benefit as well.

Q: Every leadership journey comes with challenges. Can you share a defining moment that helped shape you as a leader?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: Leading organizations through significant periods of change has been one of my greatest challenges and one of my greatest learning experiences. Whether managing institutional transformation, accreditation processes, organizational restructuring, or crisis situations, I learned that transparency is essential for building trust. Difficult moments require leaders to communicate honestly, make decisions based on values, and stay focused on long-term goals rather than short-term discomfort. Those experiences strengthened my resilience and gave me greater confidence in my leadership approach.

Q: Innovation and collaboration are essential for growth. How do you encourage both within your teams?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: I believe innovation starts with psychological safety. People are willing to share their best ideas when they know they are respected and heard. I work to create environments where different perspectives are welcomed, thoughtful experimentation is encouraged, and mistakes are treated as opportunities to learn. The best ideas rarely come from one individual. They emerge when talented people work together toward a shared purpose and trust one another throughout the process.

Q: In your experience, what separates exceptional leaders from everyone else?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: The leaders who consistently perform at the highest level share several important qualities. They remain curious, emotionally intelligent, adaptable, humble, and disciplined in their execution. They never stop learning, ask meaningful questions, listen carefully to others, and embrace change instead of resisting it. Most importantly, they make sure their daily actions stay connected to a clear long-term vision.

Q: How has mentorship influenced your own leadership, and how do you help develop future leaders?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: Everything I have accomplished has been influenced by mentors who encouraged me to think bigger and lead more intentionally. Their investment in my growth shaped both my career and my perspective on leadership. Because of that, I see developing future leaders as one of my greatest responsibilities. I intentionally coach emerging leaders, provide opportunities for professional growth, and encourage continuous learning because leadership becomes stronger when it is shared and multiplied through mentorship.

Q: With industries constantly evolving, how do you ensure your organization remains adaptable and prepared for change?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: Agility begins with listening. I pay close attention to data, stakeholder feedback, emerging research, and changes across the broader environment so we can anticipate change instead of simply reacting to it. I also encourage innovation at every level of the organization. When adaptability becomes part of the culture, teams are better prepared to navigate uncertainty and continue moving forward with confidence.

Q: Looking back, what lesson has had the greatest influence on your leadership philosophy?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: The lesson that has shaped me the most is that leadership is about influence before authority. Some of the most meaningful changes I have helped create happened without having formal power. That taught me that trust, credibility, consistency, and strong relationships are far more powerful than any title. People choose to follow leaders they trust, and that trust is earned over time through character and actions.

Q: What advice would you give to emerging leaders who hope to make a lasting impact?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: My advice is to focus on becoming the kind of leader people genuinely want to follow. Invest as much in your character as you do in your skills. Stay curious, commit to lifelong learning, build authentic relationships, and always remain connected to your purpose. Success may create opportunities, but significance comes from the positive impact you have on the lives of others.

Q: As you look to the future, what excites you most about the opportunities ahead?

Dr. Santarvis Brown: I believe we are entering one of the most transformative periods in modern leadership. Artificial intelligence, global connectivity, demographic changes, and lifelong learning are reshaping every industry. What excites me most is the opportunity to help develop leaders who combine innovation with humanity, technological excellence with ethical responsibility, and strategic thinking with compassion. The organizations that will thrive are those that continue learning, adapt with confidence, and never stop investing in people.
